The Fate of Shanghai Alleys
Shanghai alleys are a unique form of residential buildings in Shanghai. They were once inseparable from the lives of tens of millions of Shanghai citizens. They are densely packed all over the city, as small as capillaries but full of vitality. However, due to the development of the city, many small and old alleys are faced with the choice of being left or demolished. Some of these alleys have been renovated and preserved, opening up their own new lives. Others have been demolished and will be replaced by new communities, high-rise buildings or roads. These photos were taken in alleys with these two fates. The alleys that are left are still full of vitality, while the alleys that are about to be demolished are dying and about to die.
